TATA CONSULTANCY SERVICES LIMITED is one of India’s most valuable company and is the largest India-based IT services company by 2012 revenues. You will be the happiest person if you got selected in this company. You will be no more the person before you were.

Anyways, this year the aptitude pattern was changed from previous year, even the entire interview process was changed. It was my 1st selection, which I’m going to narrate here.

TCS aptitude test preparation strategy :-

The Aptitude level was a bit high from previous years, because I already came to know that none of the question would be repeated any more. So, I practiced harder problems from R.S.Agarwal, Arun SHARMA quantative books.

Basically, I practiced sums on PROBABILITY, PERMUTATION-COMBINATION, TIME AND DISTANCE, TIME AND WORK, PERCENTAGE and PROFIT AND LOSS. Moreover, I also practised problems on LOGICAL REASONING. Most of questions were on logical reasoning in my paper.  Total 30 questions, time duration 80mins. There is also a negative marking for each wrong answer of 0.33. If you want to change the answer after saving it, if you think it’s wrong, then just click on “Reset” button. The question set up was like “online test” in TCS CAMPUS PORTAL.

Some mistakes which did during the test is that I forgot to click a “save and continue” button. Until you do that your attempted question will not be considered. So, please do that each and every time you attempt a question.

Anyways, we all had to wait for 20 min.to get the result. The cut-off was around 16. It was great sight of relief for me when I heard my name in the list.

TCS Interview :-

Then we were called for the interview round on the next day at 1pm. 9th October 2012 It was really a memorable day for me, as it was my 1st interview, so I was a bit nervous too. I was the 1st candidate from our department to be called, as none of the student reached then from CSE. As I entered the room I saw there were three interviewers, I gave them a smile and wished them good-afternoon. They offered me a chair.

After, they took my C.V and application form, and asked me why marks has degraded in B.Tech? Since my CGPA was 7.7 at that time and 10th, 12th marks were 89% and 85% respectively, it was there 1st and obvious query. I answered it tactfully by saying “I’m from Bengali medium back-ground, so I was having a bit problem with the language during my 1st year, which gradually overcome.” They saw my marks has gradually increased I each semester and got convinced.

Then they started to ask technical questions.

  1. What is object-oriented programming? What are the features of it?
As I answered it, they asked next one related to it.

What is polymorphism?
It was easy so answered it with a real life example. He was very impressed as I gave such an example.
Then the other panelist asked the next question.

  1. Can we write “static public void main” instead of “public static…….”?

I told, yes we can.

Next he asked,

  1. What is the difference between abstract class and interface?
    I answered it too.
  2. What is the use of static in C-language?
Again, answering it I was a asked a related question.
Can we declare a static variable in header files and use it the program?
This I was guessing as I don’t know the logic. But he asked that had I done it practically? As, I said no then he warned me not to guess.
  3. Write the program of bubble-sort?
Before finishing it he gave me an array of numbers and told me to sort them using bubble-sort and explain?
I did it and then he told me to do it using merge sort and quick sort?
    He was impressed again.
  4. What is RDBMS? Related to that how foreign and primary key are related to each other?
  5. He gave me two SQL queries among them I answered only one, which was of “count” function. And another was a nested query, which I answered wrong.
  6. What are the steps of SDLC?
I didn’t get time to brush up SOFTWARE ENGINERRING, so can’t tell all the answer and surrendered.

After 25min.of such back to back questions from them last interviewer started my HR interview.

  1. Introduce your-self.
As I told my hobby is singing, he which type of song do you sing and your favorite song?
I told him I sing Rabindrasangeet and “Purano sei diner kotha” is my fav. he smiled and it is his fav. too.
  2. Why you want to be in TCS?
I told them TCS is the largest India-based IT services company. And according to a survey it is noticed that 70% of happy Indians are TATA employers.
Listening to that he gave a smile
  3. What are the products of TCS?
  4. Draw a graph of inflation in Indian with respect to time?
    I could not answer it.
  5. At last, he asked me about location preference?

I told him “no sir, I’m enough flexible to fit myself in any sort of environment. So I don’t have any such preferences.”

When I entered the room it was at 1:20pm and left at 1:55pm. Then I came to know that it is not a movie, securing a job is not so easy in this present scenario.

Since my Technical and HR interview was over subsequently, so I was not called for 2nd time that and I went home, waiting for the result to be announced 2days later.
But, the actual trauma was not over yet. Many of the students were called again for next 2 days for G.D and two more rounds of interview. Since my name was not in that list I really got worried and thought I was rejected. I could not tell what damn feeling was going within my mind. I was becoming anxious but could not share with anyone. Later I came to know that who were unable to clear any one of the interview round. Actually they were given a 2nd chance.

Any ways the result came on 12th October at 10:45pm. Total 137 students were selected and I was a really a lucky mascot to be among them.

So, if some of you are thinking that TCS and me? It’s impossible. Why are you kidding? Then I‘ll say guys there’s nothing to worry, just work harder than you are doing right now.

Yes, my point was that, we all have something common. There is a very thin which restricts us to move up to the very heights and the place we feel deserves for us. The only thing which matters is our attitude.

Always be positive and confident. And keep faith on all mighty God, then everything will be perfect.

Best of luck to you all.
